Why am I obsessed with the secrets of hollyhocks for skin care? Part 2

Skin Benefits of Hollyhock Infusion:

In my last post, we discussed that hollyhocks are notorious for their moisturizing and hydrating properties.
The extract of this plant (which is what the infusion is) is known to
hydrate the skin, lock in moisture and keep the skin supple and soft.
The non-greasy emollient is known for its softening and smoothening properties,
making it a welcome home remedy for dry skin. The extract is also known to give the skin added
pliability and elasticity, keeping it young and radiant.
On top of all that, hollyhocks are known to be a natural astringent,
thus, making the perfect botanical ingredient for a facial toner!

My beautiful hollyhock flowers are (were) growing so healthy

The hollyhocks will be used in the hollyhock
facial toner and hollyhock aloe facial mask.
We faithfully use Organic mushroom compost.
It's the best soil we've ever used, highly recommend.

They grew quite tall this year.
The stalks are now about the diameter of a quarter.
I'm 4'10" and they were already taller than me on the last day of May.

On June 28, 2015, I inspected the hollyhocks after a good rain
and decided it was time to pinch the tops and make the hollyhock infusion.
There are a variety of colors growing in the garden:
White, pale pink, pale yellow and this beautiful rich almost
fuschia pink (not quite red).

Rinsing blossoms

Now I must cook them very slowly

What's amazing to me as I am watching the flowers cook,
is that while the hollyhock blossoms and a bit of root are cooking,
the color slowly starts to fade out of the petals

A lil while later and the petals are even whiter.
And I must add at this point that my house smelled
AH-MAY-ZING at this point.
The aroma of the blossoms slowly simmering was heavenly.

Notice that the fluid is now a shade of pink and
the petals are now almost white.
This is the result of "extracting" the nutrients
from the flower into the infusion.

On top of all that, hollyhocks are known to be a natural astringent, thus, making the perfect botanical ingredient for a facial mask! #Lavender has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties and helps in reducing the swelling and redness. Lavender is credited with being anti-allergenic, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antibacterial, antispasmodic, balancing, energizing, soothing, healing, toning and stimulating (Michalun & Michalun, 2010). Pure Aloe balances out the skin’s natural tone, while shrinking large pores and restoring an even texture. Aloe Vera can help to clear up acne, reduce facial scarring, and bring relief to red, irritated skin. I grow my #hollyhocks, lavender and aloe in my organic garden on my 180 acre homestead in Northern TN. We use organic mushroom compost in all of our gardens. The buds, leaves and roots are all utilized from the botanical and herbal gardens.
