DIY Sugaring Paste Recipe: How to Make Natural Hair Removal Sugar Paste at Home

✨ How to Make Sugaring Paste at Home ✨

Sugaring paste is one of the oldest, all-natural hair removal methods in existence. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to make it yourself—right from your own kitchen—you’re in the right place. As a master herbalist and organic skincare artisan, I’m sharing my tried-and-true recipe that you can trust. ๐Ÿ’›

๐ŸŒฟ Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Sugar – White, Cane, or Raw Sugar (see below for consistency differences)
  • 18 tsp (3 oz) Lemon Juice – freshly squeezed preferred ๐Ÿ‹
  • 6 tsp (1 oz) Purified Water – bottled/distilled is best

✨ Sugar Consistency Tips:

  • White Sugar: Softest texture
  • Cane Sugar: Medium consistency
  • Raw Sugar: Firmest – ideal for coarser hair

๐Ÿงช What You’ll Need

  • Heavy Bottomed Aluminum Saucepan (avoid Teflon!)
  • Metal Whisk (avoid silicone whisks)
  • Candy Thermometer – target: 250°F / Hard Ball Stage
  • Heat-Safe Glass Containers – I prefer mason jars ๐Ÿซ™

๐Ÿง‘‍๐Ÿณ Step-by-Step Directions

  1. Combine sugar, lemon juice, and water in the saucepan. Whisk to blend.
  2. Clip thermometer to side. Make sure the sensor is in the liquid, not above it.
  3. Turn burner to low–medium-low. Let it simmer slowly—patience is key.
  4. Continue whisking gently. Don’t leave unattended!
  5. The mixture will bubble and thicken. You’ll see it darken over time—watch for 250°F!
  6. Once it hits 250°F (hard ball stage), remove from heat immediately.
  7. Cool until pourable (~210°F). Carefully transfer to jars using a silicone spatula.
  8. Store at room temperature and use as needed.

How much sugaring paste should you use?

Many people have sent me messages regarding this question. How much sugaring paste should I use? Will the 2 oz be enough to do...____?

Well, there's a simple "rule of thumb" to figure that out.
The 8 oz sugaring paste SHOULD be enough to do both legs from ankle to above the knee four times. This, though does depends on your studies - watch the tutorials, read through the tips and tricks, do your research on the method itself (the spread 1,2,3 flick sugaring method) beforehand so that you are more acclimated with the method and don't waste the sugar by not performing the method correctly.
Remember the key - #1: smaller the area smaller the ball
and #2: more sensitive the area the smaller the ball
On the legs, you will want to use a ball about the size of a golf ball which is just about equivalent to 1 oz. This makes 2 oz just perfect for doing the legs once.

So, for the 8 oz, for instance, you will get 4 uses. (2 oz per legs session x 4).

SO with that being said -
Legs (and back) typically use a ball about the size of a golf ball equaling about 1 ounce (half the sample size 2 oz)
While for the bikini area you're going to use a ball about the size of a nickel to as little as a pencil eraser. You'll notice the new applicator has two ends - small and large rounded. You'll want to use the small end for the bikini area.
Then we have the underarms. You'll use a ball about the size of a nickel.
Then we can go even smaller - the upper lip will use about the size of a dime, while the eyebrows about the size of a pencil eraser!
(The applicator helps eliminate heat transfer from fingertips to sugar so the sugar lasts longer).

Hoping this finds you well and these lil tidbits are helpful!

JBHomemade_Sugaring_The_Chin

There's a lot of women out there who struggle with hairs growing on their chins and upper lips. Here's how to use JBHomemade Sugaring Paste to remove those hairs lasting up to 2 weeks.

Yay! It's here! Are you ready? Sugaring will transform your skin! Sugaring the facial hair with JBHomemade Sugaring Paste.
No more painful ingrown hair, no rashes, no breakouts and no itchiness.
There's a lot of women out there who struggle with hairs growing on their chins and upper lips. Here's how to use JBHomemade Sugaring Paste to remove those pesky, stubborn hairs lasting up to 2 weeks.
Hair removal, especially from the face, is a personal process. As the unwanted hair is on the face, women are typically more careful about the type of treatment used compared to removing hair on the legs. Sugaring, used in ancient Egypt, is popular in many parts of the world but has only recently been made popular in Western cultures. Many regard this as a more natural, and therefore safer, approach to facial hair removal.
Facial sugaring comes with a range of short- and long-term benefits and is suited for all skin types and hair textures. Sugar cane's natural alphahydroxy acid (AHA) content makes for a refining and a moisturizing hair-removal method, which is known to improve facial texture and tone. Because you are pulling in the direction of hair growth, sugaring helps eliminate and prevent ingrown hairs and is said to be less painful than traditional waxing and threading. Unlike traditional hot-waxing treatments, sugaring will not burn the skin and can be reapplied to catch missing hairs without irritation. It’s also hypoallergenic and water-soluble, which makes for easy cleanup.

Exclusive - How to use Sugaring Paste to remove underarm hair

JBHomemade_How_to_use_Sugaring_Paste_to_remove_underarm_hair

This post covers exactly that.

How to use Sugaring Paste to remove underarm hair.

I know no one whats to talk about pit hair.
None of us LIKE pit hair.
Well, that is unless you're a manly man or a die-hard feminist.
But guess what? We ALL have to deal with underarm hair.
I mean, after all - we are mammals after all. But what about those of us who want smooth pits for more than a day (from shaving)?
OK, I'm sure you came here for a reason, so Let's jump right in, shall we?

There are three main reasons for sugaring your armpits.
  • Underarm hair grows pretty fast, so shaving it daily is a must.
As we all know, daily shaving can cause irritation, ingrowns, etc.
  • If you have thick or dark hair, you can still see the hair follicle through the relatively thin skin in that area regardless or how closely you shave.
  • The hair in your armpits is a huge culprit for body odor.
Removing the hair by the follicle eliminates odor until the hairs begin to grow back past the surface of the skin. Moisture plus hair is a great place for bacteria to grow.
  • Remember life before puberty?
You didn't need deodorant then. The hormones of puberty caused hair growth in your armpits. And the subsequent stink thereafter.
Side notes**
  • Sugaring your own armpits can be a little scary but the right technique can make it pretty easy.
  • You will need moderate shoulder flexibility
  • You will need a mirror and cornstarch or powder.
  • Know in which direction your hairs grow on your armpits before hand.
  • Most likely, the hair under your arms grows in two main directions. You probably have have one main horizontal crease. Above that crease grows in one direction and what is below that grows in another. In the middle, there may be a swirly area. You may have to do two pulls over that area.
  • If this is your first time sugaring your armpits, you should not work in sections larger than your pinky finger or tip of the applicator provided.

Can sugaring make hair removal last forever?

JBHomemade_Can_Sugaring_Make_Hair_Removal_Last_Forever

Q. Can hair removal by sugaring last forever?

A. It is possible to become permanently hairless if you sugar yourself correctly and regularly.
If and how long it will take you to stay hairless depends on several factors.
As every human being is an individual, there are individual hair types, so it could be
the case that you stay hairless after a few treatments whereas others may need much more.
Also, the method you previously used to remove hair has a strong influence.
Hair growth intensity is stronger in some areas of the body than in others;
in these areas it will naturally take more treatments."Anukis

Temporary results can turn into permanent. Over time, frequent
sugaring can cause the hair follicle to become damaged, and stop growing hair.
Studies have shown that routine sugaring will lead to the growth of thinner hair.
Studies have also indicated that the hair follicle shaft may collapse
and stop growing hair if sugaring is done on a routine basis.
Hair shape is determined by follicle shape.
Angled/bent follicle = oval (curly hair)/flat hair (wavy hair)
Straight follicle = round hair (straight hair).

NOTE: When waxing, curly hair breaks more than straight hair.

Body Sugaring Leads to Permanency

According to Ms. Chantalle Moerman, blog editor at
Sugaring Change, a well renowned sugarista and practitioner,
In order to understand how body sugaring can lead to permanency,
you have to imagine the follicle wall as a brick wall on a house. (*very good analogy!)
Every time the hair is extracted in the Anagen stage of
growth it pulls a part or brick of the wall with it.
As the bricks are removed the wall will eventually collapse and be unable to produce hair.
*Pay attention here:*
It is recommended that you get your body sugaring done at 1/8"
to catch the hair in the beginning stages of growth.
Waiting longer between services
(*or at home treatments)
creates more discomfort during the molding
(*spreading)
process and will not lead to permanency.
Waxing requires the hair to be longer (in the Catagen stage of growth).
When the hair enters the Catagen stage of growth it is already detaching from
the follicle wall making it less likely to lead to permanency.
Exfoliation is the key to the best sugaring treatment.
In my experience and research, your skin will get better results from sugaring if:

You take the time to take care of your skin before
and after your sugaring treatments at home.
Exfoliation is one of the key ways to keep your skin soft
and happy between your hair removal treatments!

✨ How to Use Sugaring Paste — A Natural Hair Removal Ritual

Modern beauty doesn’t require chemicals, pain, or heat. Welcome to the sacred art of sugaring—nature’s gentle hair removal ritual passed down from the ancient world to your hands.

๐Ÿ’ฌ “Wait...you use sugar to remove your hair?!”

That’s the look I always get — the raised eyebrows, the "Whatchu talkin’ ‘bout Willis?" kind of look. But yes! You can absolutely use sugar to remove hair. And not just any sugar — but a soft, pliable, natural paste made from just sugar, lemon, and water. When used correctly, it removes the hair from the root, exfoliates, and leaves your skin smoother than a rose petal.

But here’s what makes sugaring my go-to:

  • No heat.

  • No chemical burns.

  • No stubble or itchy regrowth the next day (especially in sensitive spots — you know the ones ๐ŸŒธ).

  • And if you stay consistent? It can help reduce hair growth over time!

Sugaring works with your body, not against it. Ready to give it a try?

๐Ÿ› ️ What You’ll Need:

  • Clean, dry skin

  • A dusting of cornstarch (included in every order)

  • JBHomemade’s sugaring paste (choose your size)

  • Reusable applicator (included with all orders — my secret weapon!)

  • A cozy moment of “me time”

๐ŸŒ€ Step-by-Step Instructions

1️⃣ Prep

Wash and dry the area. Apply a light dusting of cornstarch to absorb any moisture or oil — this helps the paste grip hairs better.

2️⃣ Scoop

Use the applicator (or fingers if you’re going traditional) to scoop a marble-sized amount of sugaring paste.

๐Ÿ“ Note: I added the applicator into the process because body heat from your hands can warm the sugar too quickly and make it harder to work with. Using the applicator keeps the consistency just right.

3️⃣ Apply Against Hair Growth

Smooth the paste in the opposite direction of hair growth using firm, even pressure.

4️⃣ Flick With Hair Growth

Hold the skin taut. Flick the paste in the direction of hair growth. Think of it like tearing off a band-aid — quick, close to the skin, and confident!

5️⃣ Repeat or Refresh

You can re-use the same ball of sugar in small areas until it loses grip. Then scoop a fresh bit and keep going.

6️⃣ Rinse and Soothe

The paste is water-soluble, so you can easily rinse any residue off with warm water. Follow up with pure aloe vera (also included!) to soothe and hydrate your skin.

๐ŸŒฑ Sugaring Tips:

  • Never microwave sugaring paste — use it at room temperature.

  • 1/8 inch is the ideal hair length (Anagen stage) for best results.

  • For long-term results (even permanent reduction!), stay consistent.

  • Avoid exfoliating for 24 hours before & after sugaring.

๐Ÿ’š From Me to You:

I've been waxed before... and oh my lordt, aside from childbirth? Never again.
Red skin, sensitivity for days, and enough pain to make a ballet dancer cry (and I was one!).
When I discovered sugaring, I felt like I’d uncovered an ancient secret that should have never been forgotten.
It takes practice, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll never look back.

๐ŸŒฟ The Astonishing Truth About Body Sugaring at Home

๐ŸŒฟ

...and why this ancient method changed everything for me.

Hi, I’m Jen — founder of JBHomemade, herbalist, homesteader, and your friendly neighborhood Sugar Plum Fairy. ๐ŸŒ™

Years ago, I traded razors, Nair, and painful waxing appointments for a forgotten ritual rooted in the wisdom of women who came long before us. The Egyptians were doing it 4,000 years ago. I picked it up on a homestead in Tennessee.

It’s called body sugaring — and yes, it really is made from sugar (plus lemon and water). ๐Ÿ‹

Why I’ll Never Go Back to Shaving or Waxing
Sugaring is the most skin-loving method of hair removal I've ever found. Once I made the switch, I stopped dealing with:

  • Razor burn and stubble
  • Ingrown hairs
  • Harsh chemical creams
  • Itchy regrowth
  • And throwing away plastic razors every week (๐Ÿ’ธ + ๐Ÿ—‘️)

Instead, I now sugar at home — naturally, gently, and way more affordably. My skin is softer than it’s ever been, and the hair grows back finer each time. It’s like a botanical wax, but better. No pain, no chemicals, no salon bills.

๐Ÿ’ซ “But is it hard to do at home?”

Nope. You can learn how to make sugaring paste at home (I teach it right here), but if you’d rather skip the trial-and-error of mastering the cook — I’ve got you.

I’ve spent years perfecting my own small-batch sugaring paste, and you can order it here in my shop. It's shipped fresh and handmade just for you.

How do you know when the sugaring paste is ready?

Organic Sugaring paste should be room temperature when ready to use.

If it's not, it will stick to you and the results will not be what you want.
This simple fingerprint test will tell you it's ready to use.
If you dip your finger into the paste and it tries to come out
of the container with your finger (sticks to your finger)

IT IS NOT ready and room temperature. It's too warm.

Stick it in the fridge for 5-10 minute intervals until you see
your fingerprint in the sugar when you dip your finger.
As seen here:

You want your fingerprint impression to show up in the sugaring paste.
