"Don't take for granted the love this life gives you
When you get where you're goin'
Don't forget turn back around
And help the next one in line
Always stay humble and kind"
“I think, in the times that we live in, it’s an important song, by itself, just by what it says” ~ Tim McGraw
It’s simple lyrics are exactly what we need to hear in a world filled with selfies, political finger-pointing, and the ever-present search for acceptance. Do we, as a society, understand the true meaning of these words? Or do we, as the song suggests in its lyrics, use them as a “pick-up line?” All of us, I believe, want to be humble and kind people. But hearing the song had me thinking about how often we offer platitudes to one another or on Facebook. We say things like, “I’m so sorry you’re having a hard time,” or “I will send good thoughts.” A few minutes later, we are thinking or saying things that are not so flattering about someone. We aren't being as considerate or kind as we perhaps should be. ~ Tracy LynnTracy and Tim are spot on, aren't they? I used to consider Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd my "mantra" to my sons. I dedicated that song to each of them on the radio (and of course in their baby albums!) the day they were born. Now? Why is it so hard to pick just one? This song - this truth has absolutely touched my soul, expanded my own humbleness. I have always considered myself as a humble person. I strive, as a mother and a woman, to instill in my sons the same values. Both songs, Simple Man and Humble and Kind, describe just perfectly all that we can hope for our family, our sons, daughters, husbands, wives, parents, and friends. Doesn't it go back to that age-old "Golden Rule"?

HUMBLE AND KIND LYRICS
You know there's a light that glows by the front door
Don't forget the keys under the mat
When childhood stars shine, always stay humble and kind
Go to church cause your momma says to
Visit grandpa every chance that you can
It won't be wasted time
Always stay humble and kind
Hold the door say please say thank you
Don't steal, don't cheat, and don't lie
I know you got mountains to climb but
Always stay humble and kind
When the dreams you're dreamin' come to you
When the work you put in is realized
Let yourself feel the pride but
Always stay humble and kind
Don't expect a free ride from no one
Don't hold a grudge or a chip and here's why
Bitterness keeps you from flying
Always stay humble and kind
Know the difference with sleeping with someone
And sleeping with someone you love
I love you ain't no pick up line so
Always stay humble and kind
Hold the door say please say thank you
Don't steal, don't cheat, and don't lie
I know you got mountains to climb but
Always stay humble and kind
When the dreams you're dreamin' come to you
When the work you put in is realized
Let yourself feel the pride but
Always stay humble and kind
When it's hot, eat a root beer Popsicle
Shut off the AC and roll the windows down
Let that summer sun shine
Always stay humble and kind
Don't take for granted the love this life gives you
When you get where you're goin'
Don't forget turn back around
And help the next one in line
Always stay humble and kind
New Year's Resolution anyone?
What are your thoughts on this song?
What do you try to instill in your sons and daughters?
Give me a song that's touched your soul, your heart.
