Herbal Skincare & Organic Sugaring, Straight From a Tennessee Homestead

Hi, I'm Jen — a Certified Master Herbalist and Naturopath, and the one-woman force behind JBHomemade Sugaring & Skin Care. Everything here is handmade in small batches on our 180-acre homestead: botanical skincare crafted from herbs I grow or source from local Amish farms, and organic sugaring paste made the old way, with just sugar, lemon, and water.

This blog holds 10+ years of tutorials, recipes, and behind-the-scenes homestead life — some of it a little dusty these days, but the plant wisdom in it still holds up. For the freshest updates, my full ingredient glossary, and the current shop, head over to the main site.

✨ Sugaring the Bikini Area: A Candid, Instructive Guide You’ll Thank Us For

You might think sugaring the bikini area sounds intimidating. The truth? It can be — the first time. But it doesn’t have to be. And thanks to this incredibly helpful share from a fellow DIYer, we’ve got the insight you need to make it a smooth (literally) success.

A Little Backstory…

Hey y’all, I’m Jen — an herbalist, maker of botanical skincare and sugaring pastes, and the woman behind JBHomemade. I’ve been sugaring my whole body — including my bikini area — for years now, and I love empowering others to do the same.

But today, I’m not the author of the wisdom I’m sharing.

Back in 2010, a fellow blogger named OsasMama published a post called “Sugar (Wax) Your Own Bikini”, and even a decade and a half later, it remains one of the clearest, most honest breakdowns I’ve seen for anyone wanting to sugar at home — especially down there.

Let’s give her her flowers 🌸 and break it down for today’s readers.

💌 Why This Post Still Matters
The beauty industry loves to convince us that if it’s not done in a salon, it’s not “right.” But OsasMama shared the raw truth: you absolutely can sugar your own bikini area. It’s safe, cost-effective, and with a little know-how, totally doable.

💬 “With a little know-how and a little discipline, you should be able to do it yourself for what figures to about $1-$5.”
— OsasMama, 2010

Compare that to the $180 per leg I’ve seen for sugaring at salons in rural TN? Yeah. This DIY method is a no-brainer.

🧂 The Quick Supplies List
Whether you're doing a bikini clean-up or going full Hollywood, you’ll need:

  • High-quality sugaring paste (DIY or order it here)
  • Cornstarch or talc for prep
  • A hand mirror (7x8 inches works great)
  • A clean floor, towel, and privacy + patience

👙 Bikini Sugaring Basics, the OsasMama Way:
OsasMama’s post walks you through:

  • Sugaring the bikini triangle (starting small!)
  • Handling tricky moisture issues in the area
  • Techniques for better grip and hair removal
  • Pro tips for symmetry (we’ve all been there)
  • How to tackle the back side (yes, it’s possible)
  • Dealing with the most sensitive areas gently

She even gets into psychology — like how switching sides mid-session gives one side a break and helps with evenness if you need to stop and finish later.

It’s candid. It’s detailed. It’s written like someone actually did it.

💡 Top Community Tips (From the Blog Comments)

I loved seeing the real, unfiltered feedback from readers over the years. Here are a few gems:

🩷 “Sugar as soon as your period is done — you’ll be less sensitive to pain.”

🩷 “No alcohol beforehand — it heightens sensitivity.”

🩷 “Sit on the toilet instead of squatting. Easier, more relaxed!”

And this one? Iconic:

“Yes, I am still alive, and yes I like how smooth and soft the skin feels.”

😂💀 We’ve all been there.

🧠 Want to Try Sugaring for Yourself?

I’ve been hand-making my own sugaring paste for years — and I sell it too, in firm or soft consistencies, shipped fresh from my farmhouse kitchen.

👣 Final Thoughts (From One DIY’er to Another)

Sugaring your bikini area is a personal, brave, and empowering ritual. It’s not just about hair removal — it’s about reclaiming your own rhythm, privacy, and comfort.

If you’re just starting out, be patient with yourself. Use small balls of paste. Go slow. And for goodness’ sake, use powder. 😂

And most of all: trust your body.

Thanks again to OsasMama for writing such an awesome how-to — and if you enjoyed this post, go give her blog some love:
